The German-born artist Helmut Siber began to paint scenes of weather during the 1930s while on an expedition off the coast of Bombay. Caught in a heavy thunderstorm on an island, he decided to paint the dark wind-torn clouds, and this was the beginning of a new life-work for him. He spent many years attempting to capture cloud formations and movements as quickly as possible with a wet paper and watercolor technique. In the late 1950s he settled with his wife in Peacham, Vermont, and painted extensively in the White Mountain Region. He became associated with the Fairbanks Museum and his work was exhibited here. The Museum now holds more than 100 of his paintings.
